I think it's going to be pretty damn hard to explain a salary like that to a general public who, for the most part, thinks librarians just sit behind a desk and shush people all day long.

Personally, I think that salary is far too exorbitant for the position, even though I'm sure the amount of work is immense. If the system is struggling and having to cut services, then perhaps excessive salaries should be cut before library jobs and services. Even in NYC, I doubt cost of living is that high.
